Troubleshoot KDS sync, sound, and order visibility

Use a fast triage order for missing tickets, silent devices, scheduled orders, and screens that do not match each other.

When KDS acts wrong, start with the simple checks first instead of re-registering the device right away.

The fastest order is: confirm the device in Kitchen Display Screens, refresh KDS, test with a known-good order, then decide whether the screen needs a new setup code.

Quick facts

Start here

  • If Sync across devices is off, progress and clears stay local to that browser.
  • If Play chime is on but the device has not allowed sound yet, the screen still needs the one-time Enable Sound tap.
  • Scheduled orders can be healthy and still stay out of the main queue until the promote window opens.
  • Enqueue Test Order is the fastest way to prove whether the screen can still receive a fresh ticket.

Step 1: Confirm the device record first

Open the KDS manager page and review the device settings

Go to Kitchen Display Screens.

Find the screen in Registered KDS Devices and check that it is still active, named correctly, and tied to the right location.

Use the manager page to check whether the screen is registered, synced, chime-enabled, and able to receive a test order.

If new orders are missing

  • Refresh KDS first and keep the screen open on that page.
  • Use Enqueue Test Order in Kitchen Display Screens. If the test order appears, the screen is healthy and the issue is likely upstream in the order flow.
  • If a scheduled order is missing from the main queue, check the Scheduled drawer. It may still be waiting for the auto-promote time.
  • If the device was disabled, revoked, or pointed at the wrong location, fix that on the manager page before you test again.
Check the live KDS queue and scheduled drawer after a test order so you know whether the screen is receiving work at all.

If two screens do not match each other

Open Kitchen Display Screens and compare the Sync across devices setting on both screens.

When sync is off, line-item completion and clears are saved only on that one device.

  • Turn sync on when multiple stations should share one truth for prepared items and cleared tickets.
  • After changing sync, refresh both devices so they pull the newest shared state.
Use the device settings screen to compare sync options when two KDS devices stop matching each other.

If the device has no sound

  • Confirm Play chime is enabled for that device in Kitchen Display Screens.
  • On the device itself, tap Enable Sound on KDS the first time the browser asks.
  • Check the tablet mute switch, system volume, and browser audio permissions if the button keeps coming back.
  • Use the sound settings on the KDS screen to preview another chime file if the current sound is too quiet.
Sound issues usually start with the device chime settings and the one-time browser sound permission on the live KDS screen.

When to re-register the screen

Use a new setup code only after the fast checks fail

Re-register the device when the token was revoked, the screen keeps opening the wrong queue, or refresh and test orders still do not recover it.

Generate a fresh code in Kitchen Display Screens, open KDS Setup, and register the screen again with a clear nickname.
