Design and print reusable product labels

Build a label from a preset or blank canvas, connect recipe or custom-list data, preview it, and print a batch.

6 min read Updated Production leads preparing product labels

Use the Label editor to create a reusable layout, then use Print labels to select a product and print a batch.

Choose Recipes when the label should use recipe details, or Custom list when you need saved rows and columns that are not tied to recipes.

Quick facts

Start here

  • A saved design controls the label size, data source, best-by offset, and optional default printer.
  • Recipe labels can use the product name, ingredient and allergen statements, net weight, barcode, and batch details.
  • The best-by date is calculated from the batch date and the offset saved with the design.
  • Recipe nutrition totals are a calculation summary, not Nutrition Facts artwork. Use reviewed artwork for a Nutrition Facts panel.
  • Browser print uses the current device. A site printer needs the optional Farin print agent paired at its location.

Step 1: Start a design and choose its source

Workflow diagram (not an app screenshot): create a reusable design, connect product data, preview the batch, and choose a print route.

Choose a preset or create a blank layout

Open Label editor. Choose a preset, create a blank label, or create a custom-list label.

In Design settings, name the design, choose Recipes or Custom list as the data source, and set the label width and height to match your stock.

  • Add recipe or business fields from the field list, or add text, a business logo, a trace QR, a barcode, a divider, or a nutrition image.
  • Select an element in the preview to edit it. Drag to position it and use its corner handle to resize it.
  • For Custom list, add columns and saved rows. The row values fill the fields in the preview.

Step 2: Connect products and review label details

For a recipe design, add the recipes that can use this layout and choose a default recipe if one should open first. In Product details, review the UPC or internal barcode, net weight, ingredient statement, allergen statement, and nutrition status.

Save the product details and the design before printing. If recipe names, yields, or ingredient costs need cleanup, start with Create recipes that cost and sell correctly.

  • Use the preview with each linked recipe before you print; one design can be connected to several recipes.
  • If you add a Nutrition image, link reviewed Nutrition Facts artwork and mark that you reviewed it. The recipe nutrition summary does not replace that artwork.

Step 3: Preview and print the batch

Select the design, product, date, and printer

Open Print labels, choose the saved design, then select a linked recipe or saved custom-list row.

Review the preview. Set the number of copies and batch date, then choose Browser print on this device or an available site printer. The page shows the calculated best-by date when the design has an offset.

  • Confirm the printer stock matches the design dimensions. Farin blocks printing when a site printer reports a different label size.
  • Browser print opens the device print dialog; choose the label printer there and finish the print job.
  • To use a site printer, open Set up a site printer on the print page, create a pairing code, install the optional agent on an always-on computer at that location, and pair it with the displayed command.

If a label is not ready to print

Check saved data and printer stock first

Printing stays disabled while recipe details have unsaved edits, required recipe data is loading, or the selected site printer is unavailable or has mismatched stock.

If the printer list is stale, use Refresh printers or choose Browser print for this batch.
